Inland Wetlands & Conservation Commission
The City of New London has a combined Inland Wetland & Conservation Commission. The IW&CC consists of five full time members and three alternate members. Commissioners are appointed by the City Council and serve a term of five years. The IW&CC was established for the purpose of protecting, preserving, maintaining, and using our inland wetlands and watercourses as required by Public Act 72-155 to conserve natural resources and protecting the integrity of the environment with the territorial limits of the City of New London.
The purpose of the Conservation Commission is to develop, conserve, supervise, and regulate the City's natural resources, and develop, coordinate, study and promote matters of environmental protection, as assigned or requested by the City Council, or as authorized by local ordinances or State Statutes. Land or easements may be acquired by the Commission in the name of the City.
As the Inland Wetlands Commission the members operate as a separate and distinct body. The IW&CC reviews and grants wetlands permits and makes declaratory rulings regarding development activities within a designated wetlands/watercourse or within a one hundred (100) foot upland review area of the wetlands/watercourse. Staff, certified by the State Department of Environmental Protection, can issue wetlands permits (wetlands agent approvals) administratively for minor activity with the one hundred (100) foot upland only.
The IW&CC meets the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Stanton Building Conference Room 111 Union Street New London. A portion of each meeting is dedicated to public comment, all are welcome to attend.
