Officer Rodger Baker
The New London Police Department has one of New England’s largest police mountain bike programs. The department maintains a fleet of over twenty state of the art Iron Horse, Smith & Wesson and Mercedes patrol bikes. Officers are deployed on bicycles all hours of the night, in all parts of the city.
The department has an IPMBA instructor on staff. Officers receive 32 hours of initial training, and 8 hours of training each spring. A total of 16 patrol officers and 2 sergeants maintain their training, and are available for deployment.
Three officers have been trained at the Smith & Wesson plant in bicycle maintenance. A room in the Truman Street Sub-station has been outfitted as a bicycle maintained and repair facility. Department personnel can perform any repair with the equipment maintained in this shop.
